MENINGITIS VACCINATION – IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS

Information for Patients

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is investigating a serious outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease in the Canterbury area. Although this is not local to our practice, we are sharing this information due to its seriousness and because vaccination remains the best protection for teenagers and young adults.

The UK Health Security Agency is continuing to investigate an outbreak of meningococcal disease in Kent.

Investigations have confirmed that some of the cases are group B meningococcal disease. From 2015, the MenB vaccine has been available on the NHS as part of routine childhood immunisations and so those aged over 10 have not received it as part of the routine schedule.

At the time of writing, there are NO plans for MenB catch up vaccinations on the NHS.

This vaccination is not available on the NHS for other age groups. The vaccine however can be administered by contacting a private non-NHS provider

Who can still get the MenACWY vaccine?
Most people will have received the MenACWY vaccine at school, usually in Year 9 (around age 13–14) as part of the national adolescent immunisation programme. You can have the MenACWY vaccine free on the NHS up to the age of 25 if you missed it at school.
